About the Project
Black and white was not an afterthought. It was a decision made before the first frame: I wanted a timeless tone, something that felt like a definitive statement rather than a record. A reckoning with the past, its good and its bad, its pride and its regrets, its gains and its losses.
The walk is a simple one: from my mother's home to the elementary school of my early years. I have kept those streets in my mind for forty years, from distances of hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles. The hills above Turin, the wavy turns of the road, a particular wall catching the light: these are the shapes that have stayed with me longest and that I still cannot entirely explain.
The school has changed. The courtyard, the gate, the proportions of things: all different from what memory had preserved. My mother walked some of it with me. She paid little attention to the camera. That indifference was its own kind of grace.
This project will not appeal to everyone. It was not made for everyone.
